Into the Fire (Ode to Jessica Ahlquist)

There's a Bible story of some friends of Daniel
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego
Who refused to bow before a foreign idol
So into the fire they had to go.

While Daniel's friends get admiration
 For not pretending to believe
To think I faced the same dilemma
Is something people can't conceive.

Somehow people know that other gods are fictions.
They all make exceptions for their own creed.
I agree they got it right about each other.
Who am I to pick a side? I never saw the need.

There are lots of people here who say I'm evil.
Figures from the Bible have more appeal.
I may not be perfect but I'm not evil.
It's easy to be perfect when you're not real.

Their own Bible says don't pray in public.
 Only hypocrites like big displays.
Would they have me fake believing
The make believe, the End of Days?

Somehow people know that other gods are fictions.
They all make exceptions for their own creed.
I agree they got it right about each other.
Who am I to pick a side? I never saw the need.

People tell me all the time to just ignore it.
I wish I could find a way to make them see.
If they're all so sure that they know what the truth is
Why must everyone affirm it publicly?

Now they're saying I deserve eternal fire.
What am I to do with all this Christian love?
It seems you have to have a faith or you don't matter.
I made my choice "none of the above."

Somehow people know that other gods are fictions.
They all make exceptions for their own creed.
I agree they got it right about each other.
Who am I to pick a side?
I don't have to pick a side.
There isn't any need.
